How much is a gold wedding band worth?
Wedding bands are most often 14K in the US and Canada, and 18K in much of Europe and Asia. White, yellow and rose gold of the same karat hold the same gold. A thin band often weighs 2 to 4 grams and a wide or heavy one 6 to 15 grams.
What a buyer takes off
- Small diamonds or stones set in the band, by their estimated weight.
- Some white gold is rhodium plated. That adds nothing and costs nothing.
Can it be worth more than its gold?
A band from a known designer, or an antique band with engraving or hand work, can sell for more to a jeweler than for scrap.
Before you sell
- Look inside the band for 14K, 585, 18K or 750.
- A band stamped 925 or "Sterling" is silver, not white gold.
The weights above are typical, not yours: weigh your own piece in grams. A kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g is close enough for a first estimate. Then compare two or three written offers as a percent of melt. Seewhat a fair price is.
