How to use the scrap gold calculator

  1. Weigh it

Use grams if you can. A kitchen scale that reads to the gram is close enough for a first check. Leave out stones and parts made of other metal.

  2. Find the stamp

Look inside the ring or on the clasp for 10K, 14K, 18K or a number such as 417, 585 or 750. Silver is usually marked 925 or Sterling.

  3. Read the melt value

The calculator multiplies the weight by the purity and by the live price. That is the worth of the metal inside, before any buyer’s cut.

  4. Check the offer

Type in what a shop offered. You see it as a percent of melt value. Buyers usually pay 60% to 85%.

The maths behind it

Melt value = weight in grams × purity × spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035. Purity is the karat divided by 24, so 14K is 14 ÷ 24 = 58.3% gold. The spot price is the live market price of pure metal. It is the same for every shop, which is why melt value is the fair yardstick for an offer.

The calculator works for silver too, and it can take pennyweights, troy ounces and other units. In buying mode it adds making charges and sales tax for your state.
