How much is a gold class ring worth?
Most US class rings are 10K gold. Some are 14K, and many are not gold at all: makers also sell rings in silver-colored alloys such as Lustrium, Celestrium or Valadium, which have little or no scrap value. Women’s class rings often weigh 5 to 10 grams and men’s 10 to 25 grams.
What a buyer takes off
- The stone. Class ring stones are almost always synthetic and add nothing.
- Hollow backs: an open-backed ring holds less gold than its size suggests.
Can it be worth more than its gold?
Rarely. A class ring is valued for its gold unless it belonged to someone notable.
Before you sell
- Look inside the band for 10K or 14K and the maker’s mark (Jostens, Balfour, ArtCarved, Herff Jones).
- No karat stamp usually means an alloy, not gold. Ask for it to be tested before you plan on a gold price.
The weights above are typical, not yours: weigh your own piece in grams. A kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g is close enough for a first estimate. Then compare two or three written offers as a percent of melt. Seewhat a fair price is.
