How much is a gold engagement ring worth?
Settings are usually 14K or 18K gold, or platinum (stamped PT950 or PLAT). The gold alone is often worth far less than the ring cost. The gold in an engagement ring setting is usually 2 to 6 grams.
What a buyer takes off
- The stones. A scrap buyer pays for gold only and either removes the stones or deducts their weight.
Can it be worth more than its gold?
Usually, because of the diamond. Take a ring with a real diamond to a jeweler or gemologist before you sell it for gold. Small diamonds (under about a quarter carat) are often worth little on resale.
Before you sell
- Ask for the stones to be removed and returned to you if you sell the setting for scrap.
- A diamond grading report (GIA, IGI) makes the stone easier to sell.
The weights above are typical, not yours: weigh your own piece in grams. A kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g is close enough for a first estimate. Then compare two or three written offers as a percent of melt. Seewhat a fair price is.
