Sales tax when you buy gold in Abbotsford
Gold jewellery in British Columbia carries 12% (5% GST + 7% PST). On a $1,000.00 ring that is $120.00 of tax, for a total of $1,120.00. The rate in Abbotsford is the same as anywhere else in British Columbia.
Bars, ingots, wafers and coins of gold or platinum at least 99.5% pure, or silver at least 99.9% pure, carry no GST/HST. This is the federal rule, so it applies in British Columbia too (Canada Revenue Agency, GST/HST Memorandum 17-1). A Gold Maple Leaf coin qualifies. A 14K chain or a 22K coin does not.
British Columbia also charges its own 7% PST. PST is reported not to apply to gold, silver or platinum bullion. Coins sold for more than their face value may be taxed. Confirm with the BC Ministry of Finance. Source.
