How the scrap gold calculator works
The scrap gold calculator asks three things:
- Is it gold or silver?
- What is stamped on it?
- How much does it weigh?
It multiplies the weight by the purity by the live gold price. The answer is the melt value. That is what the gold inside your item is worth today. You can see each step of the math.
- Use grams if you can. Pennyweights, troy ounces, grains, kilograms and tolas work too.
- Take off the weight of any stones.
- Weigh each karat on its own. A 10K ring is worth much less than an 18K ring of the same weight.
The gold scrap calculator is free. You do not need an account. We do not buy gold.
Scrap gold price: what a buyer really pays
The gold scrap price a shop pays is lower than the spot price. The shop has to test the gold, melt or resell it, and make a profit.
Buyers usually pay 60% to 85% of melt value. A small gap is normal. A big gap means you should ask a second shop.
Do you have an offer already? Type it into the gold price calculator. It tells you in plain words how the offer compares with the melt value. You can add a testing fee or a commission too.
A gold price calculator for buyers too
Buying gold? Switch to “I’m buying”. The calculator starts with the metal value. Then it adds wastage, the making charge and your state’s sales tax. Enter the price on the tag to see how much you pay on top of the gold.
Silver price today
The silver spot price is — per troy ounce, or— per gram. Spot silver is priced the same way as gold.
The calculator works for sterling (925), coin silver (900), 800 silver and fine silver. Silver prices can move fast, so check silver prices today before you sell. See the silver price page and thegold/silver ratio.
Why do gold prices change?
Gold prices move with other markets. Three things matter most:
- The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar often pushes the gold price down.
- Interest rates. Gold pays no interest, so higher rates make it cost more to hold.
- Worry. Some investors move to gold when stocks fall.

Melt value is an estimate. It is not an offer or an appraisal. Old coins and antique jewelry can be worth more than the gold in them, so ask a specialist before you sell those for scrap.
